Allysyn Simon shows off her edible bat during the cookie act ivi ty. MONTEREY — Things are getting batty over at Highland Elementary School. HES is hosting a variety of special activities during October to promote literacy, with a theme of “Bats at the Library.” “We are collaborating with members of our wonderfully supportive community, Highland High School faculty and students, as well as the families of our children to provide an exciting month of memorable events centered about literacy skills,” said Lynne Botkin, Title I reading specialist. “I have so much support from the community, the high school, and the teachers. It’s become a communal activity,” she said. “Our students are reading about bats, visiting caves, listening to storytellers, observing live bats, engaging in bat-related science activities, reciting batty poetry, writing batty essays, creating batty crafts, and earning rewards throughout the month,” Botkin said, describing some of the events. While the month is geared for elementary students, Botkin and other staff have involved high school students in planning and preparation. They helped create a bat cavern on the cafeteria stage for exploration and learning events. It will culminate in a literacy evening from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 24. “It’s sort of a celebration of a whole month of activities,” Botkin said. Leslie Sturges from the Bat Conservation and Rescue of Virginia gives a presentation to Highland Elementary School students with a live bat ambassador. “I think the cardboard cavern on the stage will be the star of the show,” she said, but there will be plenty of batty activities. “Ginny Neil has volunteered to run the Batapalooza in the gym. “Culinary class in the high school made neat shortbread cookies in the shape of bats,” she said. “We’re going to have a huge table of bat-themed snacks.” The book fair will also be open during the Batapalooza so families can purchase books to add to their home libraries. MILL CREEK, W.Va. — Highland closed their middle school volleyball season Monday night with a 25-13, 25-10 win at Tygarts Valley, W.Va. The Rams finished the season with a 3-10 record, winning home-and-home matches with the Bulldogs and knocking off Craig County. In Monday’s match, Kendra Meredith served 14 aces and had five kills and two digs, Lalea Mullins had two assists and three aces, Wren Cox had seven assists and four aces, Cynthia Warner had three digs, Addison Sponaugle added two kills and Brielle Ruckman served two aces. Highland defeated the Rockets last Thursday in New Castle, 25-23, 25-23. Sponaugle had two aces, four digs and six points for the winners, Mullins added two assists, four aces, two digs and seven points, Warner had one kill, one ace, two digs and three points, Lucy Honaker had an ace and two points, Cox put together six kills, two assists, two aces and six points, Meredith had two kills, seven aces and 10 points and Ruckman had one kill. Last Friday, Union Educational Complex got past the Rams in three sets, 25-11, 23-25, 15-9. Meredith had three kills, four aces and two digs for Highland, Mullins had eight assists, six aces and three digs, Ruby Huffman served three aces, Sponaugle had three kills, Cox coupled three aces with three digs and Aspen Lugo had four digs. Rams coach Lele Mullins was pleased with her team’s improvement from the start of practice to the end of the season. “This team was a very young team, so we definitely started out with basics,” she offered. “But seeing them grow individually and as a team was so rewarding to watch throughout the season. And seeing them from day one to our last game, there were so many improvements. “Getting to see players who struggled getting their serve over to now getting it over with ease, seeing players who were timid to get a pass to finally step up and be aggressive, to players mentally getting down on themselves, but then watching them and helping them learn how to overcome the mistakes made and have that ability to keep playing with a positive attitude no matter how bad they mess up has made me so proud,” she added. “I loved getting to know each and every one of my players. (Recorder photos by David Cockerham) MONTEREY — Four matches in six days. A busy schedule has suited the Highland girls just fine. The Rams won two of four, posting their first victories of the season with payback wins over the Union Educational Complex and Richwood. Highland, which had lost to Union in three sets and Richwood in four on the road in September, disposed of both in straight sets at home — the Tigers last Friday, 28-26, 25-19, 25-21, and the Lumberjacks on Tuesday, 25-18, 25-22, 25-15. “I’m proud of the way they have come together and are playing as a team,” said HHS coach Beth McGuire after Tuesday’s win. “We brought our libero (Virginia Richardson) back out and she was a little bumblebee all over the backcourt. Our serves were on point and we played scrappy when we needed to.” Colleen Adams had six kills, six assists, four aces and three digs to lead the way, while Ali Veasey added four kills, two assists, three aces and five digs. Jade Hotz chipped in three kills, Richardson had four aces and Sarah Liller served three aces. In Friday’s victory, Adams had seven kills, six assists, four aces and seven digs. Kylie Arbogast added nine aces, three digs and two kills, Liller had five assists, Veasey had four aces and six digs and Ava Summers had three aces. “The girls played so great together tonight and it showed in the end,” said McGuire Friday. “Our serves really improved this week. I’m so proud of them. We were down two players due to injuries and played most of the game with six. “Elanor White came up and played with us tonight and when Virginia twisted her ankle at the end of set three, she made a great serve for us,” McGuire added. “The whole team really showed up tonight. Colleen was all over the court and everyone made plays right when we needed them.” Highland lost a district doubleheader at Craig County last Thursday and lost a road match at Tygarts Valley on Monday. Adams had four aces, four digs and three kills in the doubleheader against the Rockets and Hotz had six aces and six digs. Richardson with eight digs and three aces, Liller with five digs and two aces, Summers with three aces, Veasey with two digs and Arbogast with two kills also contributed. Monday night in West Virginia, Adams had six kills, eight aces and three digs to lead the Rams, Arbogast added four kills, three blocks and three aces, Richardson had four kills, Liller had three digs and Summers had two assists. Highland (0-5 Pioneer District, 2-10 overall) hosts district front-runner Narrows tonight for a doubleheader and heads to Bath County next Tuesday. The Ram junior varsity team improved to 2-5 on the season with a 25-17, 25-12 victory over Richwood on Tuesday. Amelia Good had six kills and six aces for the winners, White had four aces and Kynley Smith added three aces to go with three digs. Last Thursday, Craig County handed the Rams a 25-21, 25-20 setback. Good had six kills, four aces and two digs for HHS, Williams had three kills and three digs, Smith had three kills and four assists, White had four digs and Hensley Neil had five assists. Highland welcomed families Tuesday for Parents Night, introducing parents with their athletes. Also, Highland Bath Farm Bureau honored its Players of the Week —Good on the JV squad, and Adams on varsity team — with t-shirts handed out by Susie Moyers-Ruddle of Farm Bureau.
