PEARISBURG — Six area track perfomers qualified for the Class 1 state championships at the Region C meet last Wednesday at Giles High School.
The six, along with Covington’s Mitchell Tallman, who won the region pole vault title last Tuesday at Auburn, will participate in the state meet this weekend at James Madison University in Harrisonburg.
Cougar Purcel Turner will join his teammate along with Highland’s Jazmine Douglas, Colton Williams, Ethan Moore, Eli Moore and Cayden Roberson.
Tallman, a four-time state pole vault champion, cleared 8-6 on Tuesday (enough to win the title) and didn’t make another attempt.
Turner earned his spot in Harrisonburg, after finishing tied for second in the high jump with a leap of 5-8. Turner also placed fifth in the triple jump (38-11), missing a state spot by one position.
Williams (41-10) and Ethan Moore (41-8) finished in the second and third position in the shot put, both advancing to the state meet.
The two, along with Cayden Roberson and Eli Moore, finished in second place in the 4x100-meter relay with a season best time of 46.64.
Highland’s Jazmine Douglas placed fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.76) to earn a spot in the state meet. She added a sixth place in the 200 (29.04).
