NEW CASTLE — John Wagner struck out 11 and allowed just two hits, pitching Highland to a 10-2 Pioneer District baseball win over Craig County last Thursday.
Wagner needed just 80 pitches, 59 of which were strikes, didn’t walk a batter and gave up just a single earned run over his seven innings. Patton Hull and Zach Armstrong both had two hits for the Rams, while Wagner, Evan Kimble, Eli Moore, Tristan Carpenter, Elijah Good, Levi Warner and Owen Honaker all had one each.
Wagner walked four times and scored three runs, Good scored twice and Carpenter drove in two.
Highland scored two runs in the opening inning and added five in the top of the third to take command.
Losing pitcher Jaycob Wolfe had a hit and drove in a run for the Rockets.
On Tuesday, the Rams lost in five innings at home to Parry McCluer, 18-3.
Braedyn Houck and Brayden Holdren limited Highland to just three hits, striking out nine and walking three.
Holdren double, tripled and hit a solo home run in the fifth to lead the offense for the winners.
Hull doubled, scored a run and had two RBI for the Rams, Wagner had one hit and drove in one and Good had one hit.
Armstrong was charged with the pitching loss, allowing five hits and six runs — three earned.
Levi Warner and Hull pitched in relief. The three combined to strike out nine and walk 11.
The Rams’ scheduled game at Tygarts Valley, W.Va. on Monday was postponed.
Highland (1-3 Pioneer, 3-5 overall) is at home today against Bath County.
