MONTEREY — Highland’s middle school basketball teams were busy over the last week, playing a pair of doubleheaders and combining teams for a trip to West Virginia on Monday.

The Ram girls split two games and are now 2-3 on the season.

They went on the road and lost to Green Bank last Thursday, 55-13, before beating Shawsville Middle at home on Friday, 22-17.

Addison Sponaugle had five points, five rebounds, five blocked shots and two assists in the loss at Green Bank, Haven Wilfong had four points, Lalea Mullins had two, and Kendra Meredith and Wren Cox scored one apiece.

Kendall Taylor had 19 points for the winners.

Meredith scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds for the Rams in the Shawsville victory, while Sponaugle had five points, 20 rebounds, five steals and four blocked shots. Mullins had four points and seven rebounds, Lucy Honaker and Cox scored two each and Cynthia Warner had one point. Cox pulled in five boards.

Skylar Addington and Bella Akers scored four points each for Shawsville.

The Highland boys (0-5) dropped two decisions, 50-9 at Green Bank, and 63-8 against Shawsville.

Lane Neil scored five points for the Rams against Green Bank, Kaden Neil had three and Jayden Serrett had one.

A.J. Bauserman scored 14 for the winners.

Griffin Stewart led Shawsville on Friday with 24 points.

Colton Lightner had seven points and four rebounds for the Rams, and Kaden Neil grabbed six rebounds to go with one point.

The Ram boys played the first and third quarters of a 61-11 loss to the boys’ team from Harman, W.Va., Monday, with the girls playing the second and fourth.

Kendra Meredith had four points for Highland, Kaden Neil had three, and both Lane Neil and Sponaugle had two each.

Braylon Heavner scored 13 for Harman, while Coleman Estep added 12.

Highland is at home tonight against the Union Educational Complex.
